Restaurant Write-Ups
We refer to this section as restaurant write up and not a restaurant critique. Occasionally we will write up a restaurant on this Website. These are not traditional restaurant reviews. We do not make multiple visits to the restaurant. We don’t take copious notes or wear wigs disguising our presence. We are not qualified to critique wines or wine lists. We may sometime comment on the fact that the restaurant has a ‘very reasonable priced wine list’, or ‘many great wines by the glass’. We write about food and travel, but we are not formal restaurant critics.
The French Magnolia considers this Website a “guide” rather than a negative critique. We simply make recommendations to restaurants or shops that we think people would appreciate during their travels.
During our recommendations or write-ups, we may mention the quality of service. We may say, ‘not enough attention has been brought to service or training staff on service’.We may say, ‘don’t go if you are in a hurry’. Certainly, restaurants can improve their service over time. And you may even find that your service experience was much better. We also review and comment on the price point by defining it in 1 of 3 categories. Those categories are the following: 1. ‘pricy but worth the trip’; 2. ‘a good value – good food for the price point’; OR 3. ‘cheapie quick and easy’.
Sometimes, we find the establishment lacking in several areas but we decided to do write-up because we felt they do one thing in particular very well. For example, ‘go for the quiche’. All statements are meant to be helpful to the reader. We do not make cruel or unkind statements that would reflect poorly on a restaurant. More to assist the reader in making a decision that makes the most sense for their particular occasion and personal budget.
In general, we look for the positive in restaurants when we dine out. We do not go out of our way to look for flaws. We celebrate chefs and restaurants and always support dining establishments whenever possible.
